// New Year's at The Fitz

While I love the idea of sending off the old and welcoming the new - I have never been a huge fan of New Year’s celebrations. Thankfully, I have a partner who feels a similar way and for the last three years we have been celebrating the New Year by taking a short road trip to our favorite get-a-way in the Keweenaw Peninsula: The Fitz. The drive in 2017 and 2018 were hellish - borderline death-wish type travel in the middle of a proper U.P. Blizzard. This year we lucked out and the blizzard happened the evening before.

On the edge of nowhere, The Fitz is both restaurant and hotel. The hotel portion is quaint - nothing fancy but everything you need. What you really go to The Fitz for is first THE FOOD and second THE VIEW. The restaurant is primarily a smokehouse with unbelievably delicious smoked meats. Both my partner and I are relative food-snobs and enjoy dining at all kinds of restaurants to try new foods. We both started off saying that The Fitz was our favorite U.P. restaurant, but have both recently succumbed to the truth that it is just our favorite restaurant - anywhere - period. We are extremely lucky to have access to these guys year-round as they only started keeping the joint open through the winter three years ago (the weather is harsh AF). We spent the evening consuming sinfully delicious food and cocktails with six of our closest friends - I couldn’t have asked for a better send off to the decade.

I was lucky enough to catch the last sunset of 2019 and the first sunrise of 2020.
